Successful Conclusion of 2023 American Chemical Society (ACS) International Leadership Summit of the Asia Pacific/Oceania Region

It’s a wrap! The 2023 ACS International Leadership Summit of the Asia Pacific/Oceania Region has concluded on March 12 after four days (March 9-12, 2023) of engaging and inspiring discussion and sharing sessions by all the participants. The Summit was held at The InterContinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The summit brought together around sixty representatives from eight Asia-Pacific countries and the Oceania, from eight international chapters and eleven international student chapters. ACS was represented by Sergio Nanita, Chair of ACS International Activities Committee (IAC) and two ACS officers, Christopher LaPrade and Christina McCoy. ACS regional staffs; Karen Yeo and Mandy Sum from ACS Publications also participated in the summit, to facilitate the conversations and provide insight into how ACS Publications can partner together to the advancement of the international chapter. The two-and-a-half day summit includes introduction to ACS resources, programs and initiatives, as well as professional development of the chapter leader to learn both management and leadership skills to enable them to be successful leaders within the American Chemical Society.
The ACS leader-whether for an international chemical sciences chapter or international student chapter arrived in Kuala Lumpur with an understanding of The chapters’ mission and vision, past successes, challenges, and future ideas to be shared with fellows attendees. At the end of the summit, IAC hope that this region of ACS International Chapters will have a plan in place to organize future cooperative events,such as an ACS regional meeting in the region, workshop series, or more. As a chapter leader, AIC wish that the International Chapters will lead the ACS community in your institutions and home countries and serve as a conduit for connection to the global chemistry enterprise. Welcoming address by ACS President-Judy Giordan, strengthened “The summit is aims to promote ongoing learning, development, and training for ACS volunteer leaders throughout the tenure. The goal of the leadership summit is to support and enhance the creation of ACS leaders.”
ACS Malaysia Chapter is honored to be the host of this important event. It gave us the chance to share our experience, challenges, and strategic planning already in place to organize future cooperative events and to chart our future directions. Whereas, ACS Monash University Malaysia Student Chapter is privileged to deliver their success stories and lessons learned, after being awarded with Green Chemistry Award in two consecutive years. This opportunities marked ACS Chapter in Malaysia, as proactive international section, outsides USA.
